Most shoppers looking to buy a Carhartt hoodie run into this problem: You can’t decide whether to buy your normal size or size up because you don’t know if it will shrink in the wash.
This is an important consideration because you don’t want to be stuck with a hoodie that is too small after a few washes if it shrinks. On the other hand, you don’t want to size up and have to wear an extremely oversized hoodie if it does not shrink.
Thankfully, we got feedback from longtime Carhartt hoodie owners to find out if they shrink.
We also purchased the hoodies ourselves and put them to the test in order to find out how much they shrink and how you should care for them.
Do Carhartt Hoodies Shrink?
Yes, you should expect Carhartt hoodies to shrink around 3% after multiple washing and drying cycles. Most Carhartt hoodies are a cotton/polyester blend which helps resist shrinkage, but if there is a large percentage of cotton involved, it will shrink.
Even though the hoodies can shrink over time, the amount of shrinkage is largely dependent on how you care for your hoodie.
We always recommend washing hoodies in cold water and hang drying them in order to maintain size and shape.
However, Carhartt makes very durable hoodies that seem to withstand the heat of a dryer. We decided to put these hoodies to the test and after about 10 washes and drying cycles over one year, we found the shrinkage is so minimal that you probably won’t even notice it.
What size Carhartt hoodie should you get?
We recommend you get your normal size. Carhartt does technically run true-to-size but the style is intended to be loose-fitting and feel slightly oversized. This will account for any shrinking you might experience in the washing/drying process.
